Selling FDC Coin Cover Collections

"I wish to sell my first day coin covers collection" or FDC coin covers is the most frequent question asked to us by collectors. Indeed, there are a number of ways you can achieve this and it really depends on how quickly you wish sell it. In the main, there are four options:

Option 1) Sell the coin covers individually or as a collection yourself
Option 2) Sell them through an auction house
Option 3) Sell them to a company (such as ours) who deal in coin first day covers
Option 4) Pass them to a family member

Here are the pros and cons of each:

Option 1 This option will enable you to achieve the highest return for your collection as you will be able to sell them individually or as a complete collection through sites such as Ebay and other similar channels. Whilst this option gives you the best return , it can take a long time to sell your PNC covers and fees typically upto 15% will be levied on the prices achieved by you that you would have to pay. There is also the element of packaging, posting and dealing with customers to consider. Also if you have a sizeable collection, placing adverts on any selling platform takes considerable time and knowledge. So option 1 gives best returns if time is available.

Option 2 Auction houses are a typical means of selling your fdc coin covers collection. The auction house take a fee on the selling price of your first day cover collection which can range from 10% - 20% + VAT. It's an instant sell and you get your money fairly quickly. Points to note on this method are that the sold prices achieved depends on the interest on the day and many are picked up by independent traders who are looking to retail them so are keen to obtain them at a low price to make a good margin. So this option is good if you want instant result but the downside is that you would not necessarily get a good value for your collection and you would have to pay fees.

Option 3 With this option you would approach a few companies and provide them with an outline of your commemorative coin covers collection and they would return you a value for it. Normally, all astute collectors keep a record of their collection via a spreadsheet so providing this information shouldn't take long. Once they return a value and you've decided on the company, you would post the items to them and a settlement is made. With this option you are in control as you would decide if the valuation is apt noting that they too would be be buying it to pass it on to independent traders or retail them directly. On the plus side, no fees are incurred so you get what you were offered. We too provide this service with our company should you wish to obtain a valuation.

Option 4 Here any family member can enjoy your collection and would have a sentimental value to them.
